EP 15 - "Missing Christopher" Jayne Newling
Jayne Newling is a journalist with 25 years experience with print media. She began her career on Sydney's Daily Telegraph switching to freelance with various magazine publications while raising her three sons. In 2014 - "Missing Christopher" - her memoir about the suicide of her middle son was published by Allen & Unwin and in that same year it won the Human Rights Award for literature.
Christopher died at midnight on August 29, 2002 and unbeknownst to her and her husband Phil, at the exact moment he jumped from the headland at Avalon Beach their youngest son Nic was at home on the phone to Lifeline.
"Missing Christopher" is the story of her middle son's shocking death and its tragic aftermath for the family. It's also a story of a mother and father's love and their determination not to lose another son to the temptation of taking his own life.
Since publication she has been promoting mental health and suicide prevention through media, the medical and teaching professions, to those suffering from mental illness or their carers and those bereaved by the loss of a loved one. Her son Nic is devoting his life to suicide prevention. He is an ambassador for Australia Day, Movember and RUOK Day. He travels around Australia presenting his inspirational story of loss, mental illness and hope to schoolchildren.
